The Indigo® Platinum Mastercard® is designed for people with fair or bad credit. If your FICO scores are below 600 and you’re having trouble getting approved for other cards, this card may be one way for you to build credit, but beware of the card terms and reports of bad customer service.

This card doesn’t offer any rewards, like points or cash back, but it does report activity to credit bureaus so you can use it to establish a record of on-time payments on your credit reports. After you spend some time using it responsibly, you’ll likely be able to use your good credit history to qualify for more rewarding credit cards with better benefits.

You’ll get a few minor benefits with this card, but the real value comes from using it to improve your credit.

You can check to see if you’re pre-approved for this card without impacting your credit scores. This can give you a better idea of the likelihood you’ll be approved if you decide to actually apply.

Our Rating: 2 out of 5 stars

We gave this card 2 out of 5 stars. If you’ve had a hard time getting approved for any other credit cards, this card may be an opportunity for you to be able to get an unsecured credit card to start. However, we’ve received a number of complaints about the customer service on this card and the turnaround time on payments being posted to accounts after they’re sent, so this card loses some stars for that. See visitor reviews or leave your own here.

You’ll have a chance to check your pre-qualification status before you apply, which can be nice if you want to improve confidence about whether you’ll be approved if you apply. There aren’t any rewards, though, so it loses some points there. This card’s only real purpose is to help people with bad credit build credit.

Read on to learn more.

Using this card as part of your credit card strategy

  • Understand how to build credit with credit cards responsibly before you apply for this or any card.
  • If you have good credit and haven’t been denied for other better cards, you should probably consider other credit cards before this card.
  • Make sure you read, understand, and follow the terms of the card to avoid extra fees or negative items that could hinder your credit-building.
  • Based on visitor reviews, make sure you plan ahead when sending payments to allow plenty of time for payments to post to your account.
  • Once you have built up your credit enough to get other credit cards and don’t need this card any more, you’ll probably want to close it to avoid the annual fee. Learn how that can impact your credit scores here.

The Rewards

There are no rewards for using this card, like points or cash back. Instead, it’s designed to give you a way to build good credit history, which can give you the opportunity to get better cards in the future.

The Benefits

There are only a few benefits that come with this card, and Genesis (the issuer) doesn’t provide many details about them.

  • Price Protection

See your Guide to Benefits for details.

  • Extended Warranty Protection

See your Guide to Benefits for details.

  • Identity Theft Resolution Service

Provides help recovering if you become a victim of identity theft.

  • Zero Fraud Liability

You won’t be held liable for unauthorized activity on your credit card (contact customer service immediately).

The Costs & Fees

Annual Fee Purchase APR Balance Transfer APR Cash Advance APR
$0 - $99 23.90% N/A See Terms
Balance Transfer Fee Cash Advance Fee Foreign Transaction Fee
See Terms See Terms 0%
Penalty APR Late Fee Returned Payment Fee
See Terms See Terms See Terms

Take note that you’ll probably end up with an annual fee with this card. It will show up as part of your statement balance.

We’ve had reports of people getting a pretty low credit limit of around $300, so this card won’t be very useful if you want to make big purchases.

This card will probably cost you some money and your credit limit likely won’t be very high, but that’s because it’s designed for riskier borrowers.  You should use it primarily to help you build up your credit, rather than to finance a purchase and pay it off over time.

The Bottom Line

The Indigo Platinum Mastercard may be an option if you want to a simple card to build or re-build your credit.

This card has one purpose only: to help you improve your credit by showing a record of responsible behavior. You’ll have to pay an annual fee, but if you can’t get approved for any other cards it’s a pretty small price to pay for the opportunity to build credit.

You can’t use this card for balance transfers.

Just be sure to pay your bill on time and in full every month to avoid late payments and build good history as a borrower. If you can keep up that positive activity you’ll eventually be able to be approved for a better rewards card with more useful benefits.

    Good review. Thanks!

I applied and was approved for this card, and you were correct about the $300 credit limit. Does anyone know whether this company ever increases credit lines, and under what circumstances?

    • Aame Kiersten Narad

No CLI for this one. I’ve had it for almost a year, and never had any issues. It’s helped my credit quite a bit.

  • Christopher Jennings

I have had this card for over 6 months. They claimed I needed to fax
over my drivers license to verify my date of birth so I could register
for online access. I did so in the first week. Then the second month.
Then 5 months later. Still they claim they have not received my
documents. These “so-called” people are the biggest pieces of shit I
have ever had to deal with. Who withholds the ability to access your
online account for no reason? Why does it take 2 weeks to receive a
faxed document and verify it. I literally have run up the card and
threatened to never make another payment until they allow me to access
my account online! Sound extreme? You bet your ass it’s extreme!
These are the type of dumb fucks we are dealing with. Go on….get this
card and see if you aren’t ready to burn it after a month of having to
call in to check your balance and having to wait on hold just to hear
your recent transactions from an live operator. Yeah… literally
CANNOT get your recent transactions from the automated system! You have
to speak to a live agent after holding for 5 minutes….every time!
For the life of me I do not understand why this company would put their
customers in the mood to curse out every agent they speak to. I forced
the agent to note in my account my literal vitriole and the fact that I
would let the damn card go into collections if they didn’t give my
account access online. I have never….in my life….experienced this
kind of anger for something so petty. I hope this bank folds and all
it’s employees go to prison……even the fucking janitor!

  • Gary Casterline

I got approved for this card in Jan 2017 . By end of Feb. I received a bill for the annual fee but no credit card. So I called them. They cancelled that card and said they sent another out. Still did not receive and they want me to pay them their annual fee but yet haven’t received the card yet. Y’all crazy if you think I’m paying for something without ever receiving the card. Plus they refuse to cancel my account saying I owe them weather I received the card or not.

    • Liane Blanco

What number did you call? I cannot get through without an account number, and I don’t have an account number because I have not received my card. :(

  • Liane Blanco

Have not received my card, but there is no way to get through customer service without an account number. It’s on my credit report with a $75 balance and I have no way to talk to anyone. Ridiculously stupid!

    • Rolando Angeles Garcia Jr.

did you ever resolve this? i have the same situation.

  • Sandra Lewis

Can I buy things like groceries and items like soap, lotion, etc?
